Capital Region Golf Season Guide

By  ·   · 5 min read

When courses open, when they close, and how to make the most of every month of the upstate NY golf season.

Here's what actually happens, month by month, if you're trying to play as much Capital Region golf as possible.

April

Some courses open late March in a mild year, but plan for mid-April. The bigger thing nobody tells first-timers: frost delays. Show up at 7am in April and you may be sitting in the parking lot until 9. Check conditions before you drive. Rates are at their lowest — the best time to get on courses that are fully booked by Memorial Day weekend.

May

The underrated month. Courses are in their best shape of the year, the crowds haven't found their rhythm yet, and you can still get a weekend tee time without booking three weeks out. Weekday afternoons in May are as good as golf gets here.

June

Peak conditions. Daylight until 8:30pm means real after-work rounds — tee off at 5:30 and finish 18 in the light. Weekends start filling up fast. Book ahead.

July–August

Hot and humid. Afternoon rounds in August are a grind — morning tee times before 9 am are worth getting up for. Courses get firm and fast, which is good ball-striking weather if you can handle the heat. If you're playing anywhere near Saratoga, racing season runs from July through Labor Day. Prices up, availability down.

September

The month most local golfers will tell you is the best. Temperatures drop, conditions hold, summer crowds thin out, and rates come back down. If you can only play one month seriously, play September.

October

Fall color in the Adirondack foothills makes this a genuinely beautiful month to play. Most Capital Region courses stay open through late October. Conditions are variable — some days are perfect, some days you're in a jacket — but worth it.

November

A few courses stay open, weather permitting. Capital Hills runs late when the season cooperates. Check the 518 Golf Hub conditions board before you make the drive.
