Best Public Golf Courses Near Albany, NY

By  ·   · 5 min read

Our picks for the top public and municipal courses within 30 minutes of Albany — no membership required.

If you live in the Capital Region and you don't have a club membership, you're still playing some genuinely good golf. Here's the honest list — no filler courses, no generic descriptions.

Capital Hills at Albany

This is the one. City-owned, 18 holes on the edge of Albany proper, and consistently the best-kept municipal greens in the region. The layout is tighter than it looks from the scorecard. Half the golfers in this city grew up playing here. Rates are under $40 with a cart — book early on weekends because it fills.

Orchard Creek Golf Club — Altamont

Twenty minutes west of Albany and worth every minute. The back nine runs along the Helderberg escarpment and the views will stop you mid-backswing. It's a genuinely challenging course — not a place to bring someone who just picked up the game. Greens are well-maintained and the layout rewards people who think before they swing.

Stadium Golf Club — Schenectady

One of the most underrated courses in the region. Tight fairways, small greens, a layout that rewards thinking over hitting. It's not long but it'll test you. Under $40 and worth every dollar of it.

Town of Colonie Golf Course — Voorheesville

Twenty-seven holes run by the Town of Colonie. Conditions are consistent, the price is fair, and 27 holes means you rarely get stuck behind a slow group. Good pick for a weeknight nine or a full weekend round when everywhere else is booked.

Western Turnpike Golf Course — Guilderland

Honest, affordable golf on Route 20. Nothing flashy — good pace, low rates, the kind of course where you put in reps without making it a production. Good after-work option when the light allows.

Mill Road Acres — Latham

Not a bucket-list course and it doesn't pretend to be. Local favorite for pace of play and a staff that seems to actually enjoy being there. Bring your own cart snacks and don't overthink it.
